I have an asset that is a different group and I am trying to add it as a dependency but I am running into an issue where it cannot find the asset from the other group. is there a function that I need to call?

Are you using the full asset key, including any prefixes? And are they both in the same code location? As long as you are, it should be able to find it fine.
